Holidays are the best time to ask

How your family celebrated, then and now, and why the weeks before a holiday are the easiest time to start.

Holidays bring the family together and bring the memories close to the surface. Lunar New Year, Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Passover, a harvest festival or a family birthday: whatever your family keeps, the weeks around it are the easiest time to ask about it.

Questions that open up a holiday

  • How did your family celebrate it when you were a child? Who cooked, and what?
  • What did you wear? What did you get, or give?
  • Where did everyone sleep when relatives came to stay?
  • What was the first time you celebrated it in a new country like?
  • Which traditions did you keep, which did you change, and which did you let go?
  • Is there a holiday food or ritual you miss and haven’t had since?

Why it matters

Traditions fade quietly. Nobody decides to stop; one year the person who knew why we do something isn’t there to ask. Recording how your family celebrates, and why, is how your children learn what the holiday means in your family, not only what it means in general.

Make it a family project

Ask each relative the same question, “What’s your favorite memory of this holiday?”, and collect the answers. Different generations remember the same day in different ways, and putting them side by side is part of the story.

Heardloom gathers traditions, family dishes and sayings from the stories onto a family heritage page, so they build up year after year.

Every family has stories worth keeping.
